Indian Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh paid tribute to legendary Pakistani qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan during his recent performance at London’s Wembley Stadium, celebrating the enduring influence of one of South Asia’s most respected musical voices.
Dosanjh performed Nusrat’s iconic song Saanso Ki Maala during his Aura World Tour concert on September 12. The performance marked a notable moment in his career as he became the first Punjabi artist to headline the famous London venue.
Before performing the classic, Dosanjh spoke warmly about Nusrat and acknowledged the challenge of attempting one of the late qawwal’s celebrated songs.
“Nusrat Sahab was a great artist,” Dosanjh said, adding that performing his music was not easy. He described the late singer as a “legend” and said he wanted to make the performance a tribute to his work.
Dosanjh also expressed his admiration and love for Nusrat while apologising in advance for any shortcomings in his rendition. His comments reflected the significance of the Pakistani qawwal’s music across generations and borders.
The Wembley audience responded enthusiastically as Dosanjh performed the song. Phone lights reportedly filled sections of the stadium during the rendition, while videos from the concert subsequently spread across social media platforms.
The concert was also a major milestone for Dosanjh himself. He opened the Wembley show with his signature declaration, “The Punjabis have arrived,” before presenting a set focused on Punjabi music, culture and its international reach.
According to estimates shared by Dosanjh’s team, approximately 90,000 people attended the Wembley performance. The scale of the event highlighted the growing international audience for Punjabi-language music and entertainment.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s influence has extended far beyond traditional qawwali. His powerful vocals and distinctive musical style helped introduce Pakistani qawwali to audiences around the world, while his recordings and collaborations continue to influence artists across different genres.
Dosanjh’s decision to include Saanso Ki Maala in a major international concert offered another example of Nusrat’s lasting musical legacy. The tribute also resonated with audiences familiar with the deep connection between Punjabi music traditions on both sides of the Pakistan-India border.
Dosanjh has previously been involved in other high-profile cross-border entertainment collaborations. He shared the stage with Pakistani actor Hania Aamir during a London concert, and the pair later appeared together in the Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3.
Their collaboration attracted considerable attention, particularly because cross-border projects involving Indian and Pakistani artists remain a subject of significant public interest. Dosanjh has also spoken positively about Aamir’s professionalism during the making of the film.
The film was subsequently pulled from Indian theatres, adding another layer of attention to the collaboration between the two performers.
Meanwhile, Dosanjh’s Aura World Tour is set to continue following his Wembley appearance. The singer announced during the London concert that Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium would be the next stop, with a show scheduled for November 21.
Dosanjh made the announcement partly in Gujarati while speaking to the Wembley crowd, further connecting with audiences ahead of the next phase of his tour.
