Despite ongoing tensions in the Gulf, Dubai residents and expats gathered at a popular beach for Barkfest, a festival celebrating dogs and their owners. The event offered beauty competitions, vendor stalls, and playful activities, drawing crowds eager to enjoy a lighthearted atmosphere while ignoring the war that has affected the region.
Over the past month, the city has faced attacks from Iranian drones and missiles, targeting Gulf states involved in the wider conflict between Tehran, the United States, and Israel. Nevertheless, attendees at Barkfest appeared unconcerned, focusing instead on their pets. Huskies in ski goggles, chihuahuas in sombreros, and French bulldogs delighted in the festivities, with visitors taking photos and enjoying the sunny beach setting.
Visitors described a sense of safety despite the unrest. Maria, a Latvian fertility specialist, said she felt “safer here than going back to London,” while others appreciated the lower crowds and relaxed environment created by the temporary absence of some tourists and residents. Expats like Sarah, a German attendee, noted that the situation had even improved their experience in Dubai due to emptier streets and special offers at local businesses.
Authorities have worked to maintain Dubai’s reputation as a secure city. Advanced air defense systems have intercepted the majority of more than 2,000 drones and 500 missiles launched by Tehran. Media coverage of the attacks is heavily controlled, with sharing images of damage punishable by fines or imprisonment. Social media updates from the police emphasize “sounds” of potential attacks rather than explosions, aiming to reassure residents and protect the city’s image.
Despite these precautions, some residents, particularly families with children, have chosen to leave the city during heightened threats. Yet events like Barkfest continue, allowing pet owners to celebrate and socialize, demonstrating the resilience and adaptability of the community amid regional instability.
The festival offered attendees a brief escape, highlighting Dubai’s unique balance between safety, luxury, and leisure, even in the shadow of geopolitical tensions.
