Sonya Hussyn Celebrates International Victory as Deemak Wins Award in Russia

Sonya Hussyn has added another international milestone to Pakistan’s growing presence in global cinema, announcing that her film Deemak has secured an award at the International Film Awards in Russia. The actress shared the news through her Instagram stories, calling the achievement a moment of pride for the entire nation.

Expressing her gratitude, Sonya wrote that she was deeply thankful for the recognition, noting, “Alhamdulillah! Another international honor for Pakistan.” She described the win as a reminder of the countless blessings she continues to receive, acknowledging the support of fans, colleagues and the film’s creative team.

The announcement sparked widespread celebration across social media, with fans and industry figures praising Sonya for her consistent contribution to elevating Pakistani cinema on the global stage. Her achievement further strengthens the film’s standing following an already remarkable year for Pakistani releases.

Earlier this year, Nayab and Deemak, two of Pakistan’s most talked-about films, made headlines internationally after securing major wins at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Film Festival in Chongqing, China. At the event, Deemak, starring Faisal Qureshi, Samina Peerzada and Sonya Hussyn, earned the award for Best Editing, showcasing the film’s technical excellence and storytelling depth.

Sonya also recently represented Pakistan during a promotional visit to London, where she highlighted Deemak’s message and met Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Dr Mohammed Faisal. Sharing moments from the trip, she expressed how meaningful it was to discuss the film’s journey and broader opportunities for Pakistan’s entertainment industry.

During her conversations, Sonya emphasized the need for stronger international collaborations, particularly with the UK, to help Pakistani films reach wider audiences. She stressed that global partnerships could significantly enhance the industry’s capacity to tell impactful stories and strengthen cultural exchange.

Her engagement with diplomats and institutions abroad reflects a growing trend of cultural diplomacy, though such interactions remain rare for Pakistani artists. Sonya highlighted how meaningful these platforms are for showcasing narratives that resonate globally while reflecting the country’s creative potential.

Deemak, based on true events, explores generational trauma, mental health and family unity. Its success continues to demonstrate the increasing demand for socially relevant Pakistani stories that speak to universal human experiences.

As Sonya celebrated the latest accolade, she expressed gratitude for the international reception the film has enjoyed. “Feeling grateful to see Pakistani cinema making its way onto the global stage. Thank you, London, for all the love,” she wrote.
