Mahira Khan Advocates for Structured Pay System to Protect Artists in Pakistan

Renowned actress Mahira Khan recently spoke out about the persistent issue of unequal pay and the absence of a formal salary system in Pakistan’s film and television industry. Appearing on a Day One Eid show with Vasey Chaudhry alongside co-star Fahad Mustafa for their upcoming film Aag Lagey Basti Main, Mahira highlighted how junior actors struggle financially while senior actors continue to secure work and revenue easily.

Addressing the need for artist royalties, Mahira noted, “World over there is a certain amount that goes to artists as royalties. I’m not saying we should exactly follow Hollywood, but it is a system that ensures artists don’t go hungry.” She emphasized that even a baseline framework in Pakistan could protect artists from financial instability and hardship.

Mahira also discussed how many actors face severe difficulties, including homelessness, due to limited savings and minimal access to revenue streams. She criticized broadcasters and TV channels for benefiting disproportionately compared to actors, leaving junior artists, supporting actors, and technical crews at a disadvantage.

While organizations like the Actors Collective Trust and the Pakistan Broadcasters Association aim to assist artists, Mahira pointed out that their impact remains limited in addressing systemic inequities. She cited veteran actress Naila Jaffery, who managed medical expenses during her battle with cancer without adequate industry support, as a stark example.

Acknowledging her own success, Mahira expressed hope that Pakistan’s entertainment industry evolves to ensure fair compensation and recognition for every artist. Her remarks highlight the urgent need for structured reforms, financial safeguards, and broader discussions to create a more equitable and sustainable creative ecosystem in the country.
