As the Pakistani film industry prepares for one of its most anticipated releases, Love Guru, celebrated actor Mahira Khan is using her platform to advocate for stronger governmental support for local cinema.
A Call to Focus Inward
Speaking during the film’s promotional campaign alongside co-star Humayun Saeed, Khan addressed the longstanding issue of limited international collaboration—specifically referencing the continued ban on Pakistani artists in India.
Rather than dwell on external constraints, Khan emphasized the need to “look inward” and prioritize the development of homegrown content. “There’s a whole world [to work] out there, but there’s also a whole world here,” she said. “And we need to just work hard at it.”
The Critical Role of State Support
When asked about challenges in the industry, Khan pointed to the absence of consistent public support. “We need the government’s support, because how else will an industry grow?” she said. “You have to give us subsidies—it is direly needed at this time.”
Humayun Saeed echoed her sentiment, adding that some steps have already been taken, but emphasized the need for a comprehensive and sustained policy framework to facilitate cinematic growth.
