Pasoori Becomes First Pakistani Music Video to Cross 1 Billion YouTube Views

Coke Studio Pakistan’s global hit Pasoori has made history by crossing one billion views on YouTube, becoming the first Pakistani music video to reach the remarkable milestone.

Performed by Ali Sethi and Shae Gill, the Season 14 song has grown from a Pakistani musical release into an international phenomenon, attracting audiences across South Asia and beyond.

Coke Studio Pakistan announced the achievement on social media, celebrating the fans who helped transform Pasoori into one of the country’s most successful musical exports.

Released on February 7, 2022, as part of Coke Studio Pakistan Season 14, Pasoori reached the billion-view mark more than four years after its original release.

The milestone further highlights the growing international reach of Pakistani music and the ability of local artists to connect with audiences beyond traditional regional markets.

Pasoori became popular for its distinctive combination of Punjabi and Urdu lyrics, traditional South Asian musical influences and modern pop production. Its emotional themes of separation, complicated relationships and barriers between lovers also helped the song resonate with listeners worldwide.

The song’s international reach is particularly notable because the majority of its YouTube audience comes from outside Pakistan. According to figures shared by Coke Studio, more than 90 percent of the song’s YouTube views have originated internationally, with the music video reaching viewers in more than 60 countries.

Its popularity also spread rapidly through short-form video platforms. The track generated more than two million user-created videos on YouTube Shorts, demonstrating how strongly the song connected with online audiences.

The creative team behind Pasoori also played an important role in its distinctive sound. The song was curated and produced by Zulfiqar Khan, popularly known as Xulfi, with Abdullah Siddiqui also involved in production.

Ali Sethi developed the song’s narrative and co-wrote it with Fazal Abbas. Sethi and Xulfi were also involved in composing the track, creating a blend that combined traditional sounds with a contemporary musical approach.

The visual identity of Pasoori added another dimension to its appeal. Directed by Kamal Khan, the music video used a portraiture-focused style and featured cultural performers including Sheema Kirmani and Seraiki jhoomar-style dancers.

The song’s success extended well beyond YouTube. Pasoori became Spotify’s most-streamed Pakistani song in 2022 and has remained the most-streamed track by both Ali Sethi and Shae Gill on the platform, with nearly 405 million streams.

It also became one of Google’s most-searched songs worldwide in 2022. According to a Coke Studio press release, Pasoori ranked second in Google’s global Songs category that year and was the most-searched song through Google’s Hum to Search feature.

The track also reached No. 3 on Spotify’s Global Viral 50 chart, further demonstrating the scale of its international popularity.

The song’s influence reached television and film as well. Pasoori appeared on the soundtrack of Disney’s Ms. Marvel, a series featuring a Pakistani-American protagonist and strong cultural connections to Pakistan.

The track was later reinterpreted in other musical markets. Coke Studio Africa released a remix featuring Ali Sethi alongside Nigerian artists Marwan Moussa and Reekado Banks, introducing the song to audiences through a fusion with Afrobeats.

An Indian adaptation titled Pasoori Nu was also featured in the 2023 Bollywood film Satyaprem Ki Katha. Indian playback singer Arijit Singh subsequently released his own version, which generated debate among fans over the adaptation of the Pakistani hit.

Despite the discussions surrounding different versions of the song, Pasoori has continued to grow as a global cultural and musical success.

Its journey from Coke Studio Pakistan to international streaming charts, television, film and social media has established the song as one of Pakistan’s most recognizable contemporary musical exports.

The one-billion-view achievement now places Pasoori in an exclusive group of globally successful music videos and marks a significant milestone for Pakistani music on the international digital stage.
