After enduring months of production uncertainty, Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that The Batman 2, the long-awaited sequel to Matt Reeves’ 2022 blockbuster, will officially begin filming in spring 2026. The announcement was shared by CEO David Zaslav via a shareholder letter dated August 7, outlining new timelines for major DC projects.
Originally slated for release in October 2025, the film experienced a trio of delays, pushing its release window to 2027. The confirmation that production will now start between March and May 2026 comes as a relief to fans who feared further setbacks in the DC cinematic universe.
The Cast Returns to Gotham
Despite the delays, Warner Bros. has retained the principal cast from the first film:
- Robert Pattinson reprises his role as Bruce Wayne / Batman
- Zoë Kravitz returns as Selina Kyle / Catwoman
- Paul Dano as The Riddler
- Colin Farrell as The Penguin
- Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon
Director Matt Reeves, celebrated for his darker, detective-inspired tone, remains at the helm.
Part of a Growing DC Strategy
The sequel is one piece of Warner Bros. Discovery’s broader DC roadmap under James Gunn and Peter Safran, which includes:
- Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2026)
- Clayface (2026)
- A new Wonder Woman film (date pending)
Zaslav labeled the DC Universe as “one of entertainment’s most valuable assets,” outlining plans to expand it across television, film, gaming, and merchandise.
Gotham Expands
While fans await The Batman 2, Colin Farrell’s The Penguin series continues development on Max, expected to connect directly with the sequel. Director Matt Reeves has teased a self-contained “Batverse” that operates independently from the mainline DCU, focusing on grounded narratives and deeper character development.
