Warner Bros.’ blockbuster “A Minecraft Movie” is set to debut on Max this June, after dominating global box office charts. The hit adaptation of the beloved sandbox video game will be available for streaming on Friday, June 20, followed by a televised premiere on HBO on Saturday, June 21 at 8:00 PM EST.
Directed by Jared Hess, the film brought the pixelated universe of Minecraft to life with a blend of adventure, humor, and nostalgia. It has grossed over $951 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing video game adaptation to date—only behind Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which surpassed $1.3 billion.
The film’s success has prompted Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary Pictures to fast-track a sequel. According to Deadline, the studios have begun early development on the next chapter, with executives Mike De Luca and Pam Abby hinting that announcements could come “imminently.”
In interviews, director Jared Hess expressed enthusiasm for expanding the Minecraft universe, noting the game’s massive potential for further storytelling. “There’s so much we didn’t get to explore in the first film,” Hess said. “The world of Minecraft is infinite, and so are the stories.”
Adding fuel to sequel speculation, a post-credits scene reveals a mysterious new character. While the actress playing the role hasn’t been named, fans are already buzzing about her significance in the next installment.
For collectors, a special Blu-ray release titled the Collector’s Crafting Table Edition will also launch. Sold exclusively through Walmart, this edition includes magnetic pieces and packaging that transforms into a mini Minecraft scene.
With its streaming debut just around the corner, “A Minecraft Movie” continues to prove that video game adaptations can not only succeed—but thrive—both in theaters and at home.
